Transaction Update

By Max | June 30, 2007

Today I worked with the seller again. He transferred the domain to me. I really like godaddy’s process for domain name transfers. First of all, its free which is a bonus. Secondly, and most importantly, its super easy to do. It would be really nice if all webmasters just registered their domains with www.GoDaddy.com. I am sure there are other places which are just as good, but if you are getting serious about website buying/selling, you are going to end up with a godaddy account sooner or later.

Anyway I don’t think I need to bore you with the details of transferring a domain since the email instructions sent by godaddy are very clear.

After transferring the domain, I needed to purchase another server, so I ordered one from Hostgator. I am still not sure if I am going to flip this site or hold on to it. This made my server decision a little complicated. If I knew I was going to eventually sell, then I would have just ordered the smallest dedicated which should be plenty to handle this one site. But if I end up keeping the site, it will be cheaper to host all my sites on one larger server. Because of this I ordered Hostgator’s $219 dedicated which is more than I need for this site, but should I choose to hold on to it, the bigger server will allow me to add my current sites all on one machine. So now I have two dedicateds and the plan is to drop the smaller one should I end up keeping the new site. If I sell it in a few months, then I can drop the larger one, and my current dedicated will just chug along as normal.

The problem with this setup is that it increases my costs quite a bit. Currently this new site is only earning $500-$700/mon and now I have a $219 server expense which really cuts into profitability. “Uptime is money” in the web business, so you want to do everything possible to keep the websites chugging along.

The new server should be ready in 48 hours. When it comes online I’ll start the transfer. Until then I am not going to touch anything. I don’t want the previous seller to get mad or anything when I start whoring the site out with ads, so I am just going to leave it alone until everything is under my sole control.
