Launching A New Site – iPhoneHood.com, iPhone Forums
By Max | June 4, 2007
Yesterday Apple announced that they are going to be launching the highly anticipated iPhone on June 29th. When I purchased the ipodwizard site a few months ago, part of my growth plan was to leverage the existing user base of ipod fans into joining a new forum site relating to the new iPhone. While the iPhone isn’t exactly an upgrade or follow on product to the iPod, Apple fans seem to cling to their favorite brands for new purchases. With any luck, and a lot of promotion, I’ll be able to turn iPhoneHood.com into a large iPhone Forum.
Most of the iphonexxxxx.com names are taken. I was surprised at how many were already snapped up by domainers. I wanted to register iphonewizard.com or .net, but both of those were gone. Some smart domainer realized that ipodwizard.net gets a lot of traffic and would eventually be looking for the iphone name. That’s ok. Some people will go out and try to purchase the name they want from one of these squatters, but I don’t really see much value in that. I want to keep my costs low while I am trying to launch a site. If it doesn’t grow into something, then I have only lost time. Spending extra money on a domain name won’t really change the amount of promotion I am going to have to do in order to create a successful site anyway.
The first thing I want to do with this site is to run a free iphone giveaway. I have an idea on how I want to do this, but I am open to any of your opinions. A new iPhone will cost $600, so I want to make sure I get my money’s worth out of the promotional expense. My current goal with this site is to establish a critical mass of users/posts to create an interesting and useful forum.
I have a plan to launch one more site this month. I am really excited about the idea, so keep checking back for a heads up on that one. It should definitely interest all you bloggers and ‘online money makers’.

I totally agree with you about the domain issue. It’s nice to have exactly what you want, but the bottom line is, if you put up a quality website, it can have any domain. In the future, try something like http://www.instantdomainsearch.com when you’re looking for a domain. It’s really helpful when you’re looking to find a domain, but don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. I wrote an article on Mindables about it, if you care to check it out.
