Amazon.com Affiliate Program Vs. Auction Ads
By Max | May 23, 2007
I consider my Amazon.com affiliate experiment a failure. I was originally going to run the Amazon ad for a month to compare the revenues with AuctionAds. Unfortunately after 7 full days, I have has exactly ZERO conversions. Not only that, but I only got 35 clicks with the Amazon program. I would get 35 clicks per day with Auction Ads.
I think the Auction Ads 30 day cookie provides a huge advantage. People who shop on the internet tend to be comparison shoppers. I don’t think its easy to convert someone from an ad on my page directly to a sale. The 30 day cookie also gives me revenue from any future ebay purchases the buyer might make. I know that I sometimes rediscover ebay occasionally and end up buying a couple items in spurts.
Another reason may be the fact that I was only advertising standard video ipods with my amazon ad, while the AuctionAds were throwing in random things like leather cases and other accessories for ipods. Perhaps these were converting better than I thought.
Lastly, the amazon ad was at a disadvantage because of its size, I didn’t include the big red “CHEAP IPOD” text like I did with AuctionAds.
I killed the Amazon after only a week because of poor performance. I may have been able to get some decent revenue from it after a month, possibly with some additional tweaking, but I was relying on at least one conversion per week to be able to match AuctionAds‘ revenue.
