Checking A Website’s Sales History

By Max | May 18, 2007

I think it is always a good idea to perform a few searches to see if potential acquisition has been sold in the past. Through the months and years a website can go up for sale numerous times.

Proceed with caution if a website was recently up for sale. There must be a good reason why an owner would purchase a website and then want to sell it only a few months later. Only the owner really knows what problems could be hidden. If you aren’t satisfied with his answers to your questions try finding out who the previous owner was and get some information from them. You want to make sure you are getting what you pay for.

Too many owners in a site’s history should also be viewed as a red flag. Does running the site take too much work? Are there seasonal problems? The more information you have, the more confident you can be that you are getting a good deal. I’ll often make a bid, just to make sure I get one in before an auction closes, and then continue to do research into the details of the target website.

I can’t remember where I saw it, but there was a blog article about ‘flipping websites’ where the author was talking like a real estate speculator in California. The premise was that while it is still an undiscovered marketplace, it is still possible to buy a website and sell it 3 months later for a nice profit. Certainly, the number of “make money online” websites are growing quickly and there are more people entering this game. It’s like a small scale version of the dot.com bubble and valuation will only get worse as more fools enter the marketplace.

Someone famous once said (of poker), “If you can’t spot the pigeon, you’re it.”

There are ways you can take advantage of a largely inefficient marketplace. Some people will simply pay more for a site than others. If you manage to find a good deal on a site and then market it better than the previous seller, its certainly possible to make a nice profit flipping.
