Running Auction Ads - Ad Network Review
By Max | May 15, 2007
I have placed Auction Ads on my Ipod website for the past 6 weeks. I only used a 180×150 small block, but surrounded the ad with “CHEAP IPOD” text. It can be seen here. So far I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of this advertisement.
From April 1st to May 15th, here are my stats…
| Impressions | Clicks | CTR | Total earnings |
|
|
1794 | 1.93 |
This works out to a eCPM of $0.87. This is about half of the CPM of the adjacent google ads. However it is slightly higher than my CPM network payout.
Unfortunately, I don’t believe Auction Ads will work well on most sites. The ipod site is ideal because most of my traffic is interested in electronic gadgets which have hefty price tags. The targeting text that I used is “new 30gb black ipod”. I tried adding keywords that would force the ad code to display an ipod with a price tag of about $200 rather than a carrying case that I see sometimes. This is extremely important for increasing the value of these ads. Auction ads pays out a percentage of the ebay fees collected. These fees are directly proportional to the final sale price of the auction. Because of this advertising higher priced items is much more lucrative than advertising lower priced items as long as your traffic is still likely to make a purchase.
If you choose to implement Auction Ads you will likely not see any revenue for a few days. This is because ebay doesn’t pay out until the auction ends and if your traffic bids in an auction, you won’t get paid until they have actually won the auction. I average about 2000 impressions per day resulting in about 40 clicks per day. Unfortunately I still have a lot of days with no revenue from Auction Ads. I would perform better if I was getting just 10 cents/click. Because of this I believe I could make more with other ad networks, and I am still going to do some experimenting with this ad slot.
One upside to using auction ads is the 30 day cookie that gets sent. You’ll be credited with any purchases made by your referrals for 30 days after they click the ad. This can have some very positive results. On my best day using Auction Ads, I made $25. Either 3 people bought Ipods or I got the commission on someone’s car purchase.
If you want to give Auction Ads a try click on my “Try AuctionAds” link. Those of you with product based sites will probably do well. Selling cars or car parts would probably be the ideal.
