Increasing Links
By Max | April 26, 2007
Obviously the best way to get links to your site is to create useful content that will drive people to link to it. Unfortunately, this is a chicken and egg type problem because if you have no traffic, no one will link to your content no matter how useful it is. They won’t ever find it to begin with. One easy way I have found to increase links is to comment on others’ blogs. This can work really well if they have installed the “Top Commentator” plugin since if you are one of the top commentators you’ll get a legitimate link from the homepage.
Even if there is no “Top Commentator” plugin it can be useful to make comments on blogs related to yours because people will see your link and want to click it if they think it might be interesting. There is a trick to this too though. I always include interesting keywords in my anchor text for these links. Most people just write their name. If your name isn’t that interesting considering using something that will spice it up a little and entice people to click through. When I leave comments from this blog, I use the text “How To Buy Websites.” If someone is curious they’ll click through to see what I have to say.

I began posting using the phrase ‘Community Spark’ as my name, however changed to using my real name as I wanted to ‘get it out there’ and associate myself with my web properties. Deciding what name to use depends on what your ultimate goals are.

Hi I’m working on an article looking at how the top commentator plugin effects comment rates, and quality. How has it been for you so far? A few people have noticed a jump in comments, but quite a jump in relatively simple “nice post” type comments, presumably aimed at gaining a link. Any thoughts?

I usually disapprove the comments which are obvious attempts at grabing a top commentator spot. I like to see a small amount of effort at least.

I suppose I’m quite lucky to have a tld with simply my name, makes linking in blog comments appear more natural.
However when commenting on blogs in other niche areas I have taken Martins train of thought and used the keyword as the name for the comment but I find the comments are less likely to be approved.
