Buy Alert! I Put a Bid in at Sitepoint

By Max | April 4, 2007

Check out this auction Mac Freeware.

I put in a bid on this site. I like the niche and I like the fundamentals.

The main things I look for when making a bid is good traffic sources and whether I can improve the monetization. This site is getting the traffic from google and its RSS subscribers which is a bonus because even if search rankings drop, there are still a lot of people coming to the site every day.

As far as monetization, right now the owner is only using adsense and feedburner ads. Those two sources weigh in at $1800/mon. I feel that some CPM ads would bring in at least $500 more per month as well. The real goldmine on a site like this could be ReviewMe type ads. The site has a lot of traffic which advertisers love, and it is highly targeted towards Mac software. That should make this prime advertising space for any small software publisher who wants to promote his program. I think a site like this could be pulling down 2-3 $200 reviewme type reviews per month. Add it all up, and I would think that this site can hit $3000/month under the right owner.

The biggest drawback for this site is the required regular updating. This site literally needs to be updated at least once a day. The current owners are achieving their traffic with 6 posts each week and a new owner will want to maintain that pace at an absolute minimum. There is a silver lining to this however. Increasing the post rate could result in higher traffic. Think about it. There are 13000 RSS subscribers. Each one probably only visits the site when he wants to download one of the reviewed software programs. Well if you double the number of reviews I would think that these RSS subscribers will visit quite a bit more often since the chance of you reviewing a program of interest is higher each day.

What do you think?
