My Turn To Show John Chow Something!
By Max | April 2, 2007
Optimizing a site’s revenue is the best way to increase the underlying value of your web business. The alternative, increasing traffic is much more difficult. No one is better at squeezing more money out of a website than John Chow. His personal blog “Make Money Online” is a great read for those of you trying to find new ways to increase revenue. What I like about John’s site, is that his biggest revenue streams are the least intrusive to the user experience.
I am submitting this review of his site as a part of the review-my-site-get-a-link program. Since John has over 50 reviews right now, I imagine he has had his site critiqued up and down, left and right. I don’t think I am going to be able to tell him anything he doesn’t already know about the colors or his spelling or his car pictures. However, I am going to give John some ad optimization advice. I want him to beat his March revenues and continue the growth of his site.
Rotating Banner Ads
The first thing I noticed upon visiting johnchow.com was the banner advertisement at the top of his main page just underneath the cars. By my estimation he is making about $1.60 CPM off this one banner, which seems pretty good. I believe he could bump his revenues by 20% or more for this ad spot however. Many of his visitors will look at more than one page. Based on his latest March numbers, each visitor looks at an average of about 2 pages. Advertisers want to get the most bang for their buck. If John were to approach his current banner advertiser and ask them if they would like to purchase just half the page views for 60% of the current price, they would probably be excited about the prospect. They know that they’ll still have their ad shown to many of the unique visitors, just less often. Now all John has to do is find one more advertiser willing to go for the same arrangement, and volia, 20% more revenue for the same ad space.
To accomplish this little feat, I just found out yesterday about a php program called openads. This may be overkill for what John is trying to do, but its free and it will get the job done.

I’m sure John will appreciate the advice…however, I hardly think he needs to be earning anymore!!
Nice design by the way

Heh, I guess you are the designer. Any ideas on how to change the red to blue and make the left sidebar on the right instead?

One of the best John Chow reviews.
Not a bad idea. I kind of wonder if he doesn’t already have a rotating script for testing.
