Buying vs. Building… The Easy Path for Website Success.
By Max | April 1, 2007
There are a couple of advantages to buying a website rather than starting one from scratch. For me, the biggest advantage is that it is easier for me to keep my interest level high when there is money rolling in. I am constantly tweaking, trying to find the best way to squeeze an extra dollar out of a site. Also link building can be a real drag when there is no cash flow rolling in.
Another advantage of buying an established website versus building one is success rate. While starting with little money down and selling a website for a couple thousand dollars can be a huge ROI, you have to figure in how much labor it takes to get off the ground. Trust me there are a lot of sites that get built that go nowhere. By purchasing a website you are already ahead of the game by getting established traffic and search engine rankings. A lot of websites sell for 10-20 months revenue. This is a great ROI compared to the risk involved in trying to make a startup website succeed.
There is one big drawback with purchasing a website. You have to put a lot of money on the line with your initial investment. Should you get scammed in a purchase, you are going to lose a lot of money. You’ll also need to actually have some cash saved up to make a website purchase. This can be a daunting task for someone who is cash strapped already. Fortunately websites come in all sizes, and there is something available for just about any budget.
Another drawback with purchasing a website is that you don’t get to decide whats for sale. If you know nothing about baby dolls and a potentially great site about baby dolls pops up on the market, the best plan may be to just stay away. You don’t want to be miserable trying to recoup your investment by having to create content in a niche where you have no experience. This could involve a steep learning curve and become more work than its worth.
